I'm not at the stage where I know exactly what I want yet, but ideally in my head I'm looking at like ~10-20 human characters and ~100-200 monster characters.

I've been using still images of old monsters I made for my first game and human characters from a paper-doll program (examples of both v)

I really don't know exactly. I don't have the best aesthetic taste I'm told.

One of the main inspirations for this is an old PC freeware game called Castle of the Winds which had a really nice simple and colorful art style.

#ScreenshotSaturday my new project is coming along well, I'm still looking for an art style (and maybe an artist 👀) but I've got some wild mechanics going on, including knockback effects that transfer momentum from one char to the next!

I call it monster pinball!

Our burly hero (I've decided to name him Manfred) can now attack and destroy just about any wall, though doing so too much will surely kill him quickly. But he is in testing mode and does not care about such things as death!

The UI needs to show the status of 4 different characters at a glance, and to capture the "old school" feel of the game it needed a "status bar" which pops up whenever something happens, as well as a log for the player to look over recent attacks/events. Maybe the visual design is the problem?

Many of the refunds for Monsters of Mican state controls and UI as the primary issue. I've given it a great deal of thought and honestly I have no clue how to improve either. The controls are meant to be flexible and snappy, allow you to freely look and also use a lot of abilities whenever you want.
