worth pointing out that game devs at xbox are some of the very few people at microsoft engaged in work that people actually want. no one wants copilot. no one wants to rely on windows anymore. no one wants teams and no one wants drone targeting AI. but i do want pentiment

Yes, adjusted for inflation games were much more expensive back in the day.
But back in the day there weren't inexpensive or free substitutes for big video games like there are today with f2p, subs, etc.
Apples and oranges to compare today to the 90s when it comes to game pricing. Shrug.

Folks in gaming have so internalized the idea that the huge live service games are huge that they are rarely brought up as why new games struggle to find an audience.
New games struggle (imo primarily) because there's no air for them to breathe. The biggest competitor to any new game is Fortnite.
