Every time I travel I go to stores that sell cassettes and go to weird places where I meet weirdos like this guy in Bangkok

I really lusted after these for a while because I like the idea of leaned forward straddle position for more involved work, but I’ve never been able to field test them for more than a few minutes. Also the magis 360 stool seemed interesting as a standing desks seat for similar reasons.

I think that’s what this was about

It was actually 24 ho urs, Ho short for Saint Homobonus and Urs being a term for the anniversary of sainthood. So I’m guessing we will see an end to this in November 2049.

Mandalay is going to struggle to repair the damage and the military junta will make humanitarian aid harder to access for people who have been injured. Defunding of USAID is also going to hamper efforts here, although Trump has pledged to help.

Mandalay is also home to a huge Indian diaspora incidentally, and you can find really incredible chapati/roti/etc. there.

Given how amazing this place is, one could imagine with a more open government that the place would be a destination for tourism. This is double edged sword, but if the country ever opens up, its rich history and amazing landscape will be the easiest lever to pull to improve material conditions.

An astrologer told the King that if the pagoda was ever finished, he would die, so the project was abandoned. In 1839 an earthquake did huge damage to the region and left significant cracks in the structure. Here's a nearby model of what the pagoda would have looked like if completed:

I also met a remarkable man while trying to organize a trip to Mingun, which is a boat ride up the river from Mandalay. Relevant to today's events, in 1790 the king at the time had ordered a giant stupa to be built, which would have been the largest in the world at 150 m tall.

I still have their business card on my fridge. The act is very silly, a vaudeville routine without a lot of complexity - and for a long time I had a hard time understanding how leaders can be so thin skinned that someone would be offended by the very modest political speech they engaged in.

Mandalay is also home to some of Burma's most famous political dissidents, The Moustache Brothers. Par Par Lay (RIP) was jailed 3 times for insulting the junta, and his brothers were also jailed for similar acts. Tourists were able to view their act in their modest house in Mandalay.

Illegal to sell but legal to possess - but most of it comes from people driving across the border or in airmail from Europe that gets seized frequently. I imagine everyone is going to start hoarding them and saving bottles for special occasions or moments of quiet contemplation.

Here’s an answer I got when I asked if there was any rear screen projection process work in Jaws.

Rewatching Jaws to keep up with @blankcheck.bsky.social and was curious how they did some of the night/dusk scenes in the Orca (specifically rear projection), but GoogleAI educated me. I missed the Jason and the skeletons scene, and I didn’t think this was a Harryhausen movie. I guess I was a fool.
