Some of the best discoveries are fortuitous. Chemists modified an antibiotic (vancomycin) targeting gram-positive bacteria to make it more effective against resistant strains. In doing so they unexpectedly made a form of vancomycin that also kills gram-negative bacteria

I'm repeating this as dogwoods are more broadly in flower. On the left with white bracts (not petals) is a flowering dogwood inflorescence, containing many flowers. The closeup shows the individual flowers. We can learn a lot just by looking at nature carefully.
