Opinions: Children’s books are the most delicious; watercolour is liquid colour therapy; animals and GREEN are pure joy.

Facts: Actually autistic, breast cancer beater, sopaipilla eater, my book, Gertie is Not ALL Dogs, out now, Clavis Publishing.
Ooh and now found out about Homo floresiensis. So interesting. Next search will be to find a good children’s book on the topic. Often a far more enjoyable way to learn, I’ve found.

Yeah, was thinking the same. A win for us/human honey-eaters but less so for wildlife overall. But it’s still a win.

Huge Riverford fan here 👏🏼 One of the few ways of ‘voting’ with my money where I feel confident it’s for something positive.

I just read it and LOVED IT. Bought it at @mrbsemporium.bsky.social in Bath. Maya is such a great character, as is her uncle, her mum, and, well, everyone really. And it weaves in such powerful threads too, the power of words/books, refugees, immigration, community… absolutely loved it.

A society where we are told we should have achieved xyz by x age. A love of learning is more important than hitting milestones that are stipulated for the entire population regardless of differences.

Did you read the caption? She’s saying that just because your child doesn’t hit certain targets at specific ages doesn’t mean there’s an issue - and that love of learning is what’s important! Kind of ironic that people ‘not reading’ led to such misinterpretation.

Really interesting. I really appreciate the ‘then if not that, this is what’s really needed/useful/effective’. I do hate when someone pisses on someone’s chips but doesn’t offer up some other ‘dish’ to help. Reading the article, the author does both. Thanks for sharing!

As well as spread truth, knowledge, and all important HOPE. We can’t give up. That’s how I’m feeling today.

Olivia Lomenech Gill (winner Carnegie Medal for Illustration) has plans to dedicate her prize to supporting libraries/books/ed in Palestine. As book creators we can’t directly feed thousands of starving children aside from donating, so another thing to do is to focus on how we might help rebuild...

Avoiding social media is definitely helpful, and diving in to the ‘why’ of what I do, which isn’t about awards or seller ranks.

So good to read. Something that has helped me is to remind myself that when I’ve won stuff or achieved a ‘magical milestone’ in kidlit, it hasn’t necessarily made much of a difference! 😂 I still had the same concerns, worries, insecurities as before the Big Good Thing.

Incredible! Makes sense with those long limbs. Pretty too 🤩

Stable is almost like an antonym of creativity in people’s minds I think! But I’m rubbish at creating without stability in my life 🤷‍♀️

Love that. It’s really true, without curiosity/some kind of exploration of ‘something’, there’s no art.
July 9, 2025 at 8:07 AM
True! There’s a lot of hating/imposter syndrome/despair when making any kind of art. Interesting topic - I’ve always suspected that in pop music,it’s easier to write a popular sad song than an upbeat happy one that’s loved. Maybe there’s more agreement on what makes us sad than happy?
