my feeling is that students know that degrees do not guarantee them a decent lifestyle post graduation, but know that doing a degree buys them time to transition from education to what ever happens next. Some of them get into their course, but many just want 3 hassle free years in their life

i like the way Awesome is where British evaluations begin to exceed the US. Matches up with my own usage too. Sincere use of awesome is reserved for really singular natural phenomena, virtuoso performances and other once in a lifetime experiences.

that is a hypothetical on the level of near light speed interstellar travel though. In much the same way as I won't be worrying about the impact of time dilation on human civilisation, I'm happy to not get apocalyptic about AI sentience. It's a distraction from the real threats AI currently presents

there's a tendency in AI boosterism to present LLM as a techno upgrade on a priest/guru/therapist and it"s entirely bogus- even if it delivered, it's infantilising, and there is no reason why compiling the average answer to a question should be the right solution to life.

because those reasons still work for a lot of people and until the source of that discontent is resolved people like Farage have got the upper hand. Reform voters are a significant demographic, so they have to be included, the idea they can be won over with rational economics is naive.
