On my way out to Ely on a train that stops at Cambridge North, aka the station that if it had opened 6 months earlier would have changed the course of my life.

Despite being disproportionately into Quatermass and the Pit (1958) for someone born not in that year, I've only just now watching the Hammer horror remake, and my god 1967 seems to have been a time.

It ended up taking 1 hour 15. In the rain. Urgh.
I know that some people have cars and on the whole that is sub-optimal but sometimes it’s pouring with rain and your 2.7 mile journey is going to take 50 minutes

Iona is a fantastically good writer.
So I wrote two books. both are set in London, in winter, in 2021. One is an alternate future history, a sparse love story where a spad and civil servant work on Brexit together and fall unwillingly in love; the other is a sports anime, a post-pandemic f/f romance. here they both are:

From Quatermass and the Pit (1958):

"If we found out that our Earth was doomed, a thousand years from now, or a hundred, what would we do about it?"

"Nothing. Just go on fighting each other as usual."

they just put that on tv in 1958. I love this, I love Quartermass, I love his insane prescience.
did you not know that one of my favourite things in the entire world is a terrifying black-and-white BBC SF horror serial from 1958? well.

I only lived in New York for a year and was Changed by it. I keep thinking about its good news and what wonderful news it is.

if fucking ChatGPT could do any of the goddamn things the stupid fucking internet and also apparently every stupid person I know thinks it could, it wouldn't have to ADVERTISE AT ALL, let alone coy fuckboy minimalist copy CAREFULLY DRAFTED NOT TO BE ACTIONABLE

god, I'm mad about this bullshit.

I've had a sufficiently bad day that I'm rewatching Quatermass and the Pit.

so the thing about grief is that you never get over it. there's no metaphor. there's no kindness. Ingrid de Kok calls it the "undoused burning pyre of war". my dad would've been 70 this year! and Phoebe, half that: half of nothing, half of nothing that will ever come to pass. but we live, still.

someone else said it and it made me laugh: welcome, New York, to the global sorority of cities run by charismatic leftie Muslim mayors that we love and secretly would if you know what I mean and you do

It has been so nice to have ppl talk to me about Goodness Gracious Me all day! You cannot understand, unless you were there, the things white people in the UK did to us in the 90s: all that small and large and complicated violence. GGM was special.

There is a little bluesky meme going around asking what your “curry order” is, which is not aimed at a community I am part of, but I am going through a Goodness Gracious Me renaissance right now so here’s the classic for everyone’s delight youtu.be/H-uEx_hEXAM?...

why I am still a huge fan of Dishoom: they're higher-end, beloved of white Londoners and tourists, gimmicky in their way; but, they can host real Indian families, we can go in and make a racket and grill the water about his antecedents and be met who we are. anyway my mum had a lovely 70th!

A few weeks into my first job as a qualified lawyer, I had to pull my line manager away from a teetering case load to explain I had stapled my own thumb
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? I don’t mean “cheating on your partner” stupid, I mean stupid stupid. Like, once, I had this bubble bath which smelled absolutely delicious, so I took a big glug of it. That kind of stupid. (It did not taste delicious.)
