I plan to incorporate nutrition with patients by using my knowledge to help patients work on substitutions of meals rather than eliminating food completely. I want my patients to enjoy the foods they love while also keeping it nutritious and balanced. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Greens like spinach are undervalued. They are so important to your diet and sometimes you just need to find a way to make them good! Blending them into a smoothie, cooking them down, or adding them to a salad, are all ways to get in those greens!

Being kind is not something new, but when working in healthcare with a vulnerable group of people, it’s important. One wrong comment or judgement can really ruin someone experience and feelings. Tom’s story is something people experience if you aren’t being careful/kind. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

One thing that stuck with me was the affects of shaming leading to depression and anxiety. I knew shaming isn’t good, but the reminder of how it really affects someone stuck with me. We need to be more kind and considerate, especially in healthcare field. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

The barriers I get challenged with the most is the relative cheapness of the unhealthy foods. I think that being an international student living in the United States, everything is more expensive and access to the unhealthy foods is much easier. These things make it hard.#beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Carnivore diets have been trending recently on my TikTok feed. It’s diet that consists of eating only animal products and no fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes. This diet has some warning around it as it can lead to certain nutrient deficiencies as well. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

I wanted to share this as at the end of the lecture we talk about the misleading information that many brands may present to us to make us believe something, I think this is a perfect reminder that understanding the facts and food comparisons is really important!
Critical thinking isn't just about spotting biases & misinformation from other people, we need to look at our own thoughts too. We all have biases which can cloud how we filter information. Plus, in an evolving field like nutrition, knowing something was true before, doesn't mean it's true forever!

I feel our society struggles with diet culture. What and how much of everything you need to eat, including foods that we would consider healthy (vegetables or fruits) has become a problem. Someone once said they stopped eating fruit because it had too much sugar. So interesting!
