And they’re absolutely right. YA by and large feels like a genre rather than an age category. Some authors do try, a few succeed but it feels like the majority are writing for who can afford 20$ books aka working adults.
I talked to A LOT of teens over the weekend and when we discussed YA books, near all of them were like “Eww.” I then asked why they felt that way and the overwhelming response from actual teens was “all the characters feel like they were written by millennials cosplaying a teen”

I concur.
Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about how a punitive approach to raising children just gets us punitive adults.
And adults double down on the behaviors they were raised with when things get hard.

I’m going to keep it real and hope I don’t get accused of overstating the issue; children’s liberation is the key to the future you want. The active, and often dismissed, oppression of children is near the root of what ails us as a nation.
