Trying to regulate AI is going to end up like trying to regulate encryption. The genie is alreasy out of the bottle and so preventing regular people from using it won’t stop bad actors from using.

The knowledge is already out there. The research papers have been online for years.

there's a particular style of grievanceposting where absolutely no interaction that isn't utterly submissive agreement is acceptable; even when i agree in principle with the grievance, it's immensely offputting because i know participation is neither expected nor welcome.

One thing I’ve long argued is that privacy advocates talk about the harm of targeted ads but can’t actually prove any harm outside of saying it gives them the ick.

Now a court of law has said the same to the FTC. 😬

many people don't want this though. they want another alternative to elon, because having an authority figure means they can short-circuit grappling with the complexity of reality into "why didn't the ceo fix this already"
i don’t want to just be the nicer alternative to elon — i want this to be a paradigm shift where i was influential in kicking it off, but overall it is about the town square of public social becoming more self-organizing and open to innovation

Lina Khan’s obsession with big tech continues to be an embarrassing blind spot.

Weird to write an editorial framing AI regulation as a big tech problem when what happened is a scrappy startup, OpenAI, disrupted the industry while Google self regulated itself into being a has been.

Let's do a sheesh chain. That's a single reply chain where each reply has a sheesh with exactly one more e than the sheesh above it, all the way to the fabled 300-character sheesh. The timeline couldn't do it, can the skyline?

I'll start: sheesh

So much of the difficulty of complex analysis would be ameliorated by an ability to visualize 4 spatial dimensions...

yes. there’s other ways to deal with even the worst actors. ignore, shun, humorously dismiss, refute. but “bullying” escalates cycles of confrontation that bring out the worst in people. i think bad actors sometimes thrive off the negativity too.
