The witches of Flanders are everywhere. Their tales may be forgotten, their voices unheard, but they are anything but quiet.

Some pictures of the enchanting woods in Bellevaux (Bouillon). There must be fairies there.

SO CLOSE. Who wouldn't want a book that holds Flanders inside its covers, with witches wandering from page to page doing witchy things?

‘The war which is coming
Is not the first one. There were
Other wars before it.
When the last one came to an end
There were conquerors and conquered.

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle …

      — Only the monstrous anger of the guns
      Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,—
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
      And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

Anthem for Doomed Youth

I feel that there is much to be said for the Celtic belief that the souls of those whom we have lost are held captive in some inferior being, in an animal, in a plant, in some inanimate object..until the day..when we happen to pass by the tree...which forms their prison

--Marcel Proust, Swann's Way
According to some Flemish folktales, ghosts live in trees. In one story, nobody dared to go near a pile of rotten tree trunks because it was said to bite and chew. In another, you could only pass a particular tree if you made the sign of the cross first.
