According to some Flemish folktales, ghosts live in trees. In one story, nobody dared to go near a pile of rotten tree trunks because it was said to bite and chew. In another, you could only pass a particular tree if you made the sign of the cross first.

1/2 According to Flemish folktales, Die Gnydige was a witch who could shapeshift into a cat. The villagers grew tired of her gatherings to which hundreds of cats came, and burned down her den. The felines walked unharmed through the flames and chased the men away.

According to a Flemish folktale, there was a woman who claimed she was afraid of nothing. One night, she went to a graveyard for she preferred to collect bones rather than pick flowers. As she reached for them, a voice suddenly spoke 'Don't touch me. Those are my bones.'

According to a Flemish folktale, a man mocked a witch. She told him to leave those alone who leave you alone. When the man went home, a screeching cat jumped in front of him. The cat vanished and reappeared again and again. He arrived home more dead than alive.

According to a Flemish folktale, people went on pilgrimages and visited monks to make a witch give up her powers. Their attempts were fruitless. She remained a witch and cursed the houses of those who had wanted to change her.

'She was a wicked witch who was lying in wait there for children. She had built her house of bread only in order to lure them to her, and if she captured one, she would kill him, cook him, and eat him; and for her that was a day to celebrate.'

According to some Flemish folktales, the surest way to meet a werewolf was to walk the country roads after dark. More often than not, a robber wearing a wolf mask would appear from behind the trees and demand your possessions.
