Had our 1st joint lab fun activity with the Bonney Lab @stephaniebonney.bsky.social - a pumpkin painting party! 🎃 So creative!

Works well with our 4th floor Halloween activity of 'guess the 🧠 pumpkin's weight' ⚖️...🧠 pumpkin now has a vasculature complete w/ perivascular fibroblasts & macrophages!

For all those who are WFH today, riding the struggle-bus through a mid-October, not-enough-time-left-in-the-year-and-things-feel/are-crappy Monday 🙋‍♀️...take a DEEP breath &, if possible, pet your animal...get a nice, deep scratch in!

My mood this morning...
Reviewing my 3mo science goals going into mid-October, ✅ boxes off & looking at this picture that accurately describes me ATM [the 'empty nester', me making a funny face, my boy walking out of the photo frame...from Coit Tower in SF this summer].

Listening to the new Taylor Swift album & working on figures, sharing a 🤩 image for #FluorescenceFriday

We login with our university ID onto the imaging analysis computer & I always laugh being greeted by 'younger Julie' in my first faculty photo 😂

(**I am apparently am THAT kind of faculty that does not update their photo though I now understand why this happens...who has time for that?!?!)

Clark has a had a rough couple weeks...'mom' has been too busy writing grants to hike ⛰️...he was bit by another dog on a walk [required a vet visit & staples 🥴]...BUT 'mom's' grant is submitted, wound is healed & it's a GREAT day for a long hike....made perfect with a dip in the creek at the end. ❤️

Submitting a R01 grant today...different R01 submitted in April has study section tomorrow....
*cue me humming, head-nodding along to Cindi Lauper's "Girls just want to have fun"...changing the last word to "funding"...because that's all we really want. Seriously.

Next week is 13 yrs since I started at @cuanschutz.bsky.social & opened the Siegenthaler Lab...very grateful for every trainee, every colleague & collaborator, every grant/foundation $$ that contributed to our discoveries. Even now, over a decade in, I am happy to be @ the 🔬 & imaging the meninges.

Great new work led by @biomarina-vg.bsky.social on zebrafish meninges!

Particularly 🤩 is the descriptions of ependymin-expressing meningeal cells (not a fibroblast!) & ablation studies showing their essential role in viability. So much more to learn!

Congrats Marina & team on this great work! 🦓🐟🧠

Dr. Maud Menten is on my 👩‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👩🏻‍🔬 in STEM Wall of Fame. When I put this together in early 2025, a Christmas gift to myself, I knew that I, & others, would need a daily reminder of their great accomplishments & perseverance in the face of difficult odds. 🙏 @minouette.bsky.social for the beautiful prints!
