📝 #EconSky I'm excited to announce that I am on the market this year! In my JMP, I (and Jose Montalban) study affirmative action in the context of school choice at age 3 —when skills are most malleable and returns are the highest! 👶🏫

Today is one of those days that I am disappointed in our profession. Reading a referee letter suggesting a rejection based on two points completely covered in the paper is disheartening. 5 years invested in an RCT to be rejected because of someone's inattention.

We had an amazing time this week hosting @arielkalil.bsky.social from UChicago in Potsdam & Berlin! Lots of fascinating conversations about parenting, behavioral tools, supporting disadvantaged kids, arts—and only a tiny detour into tariffs ;)

Merz said yesterday he will not allow the country to be led by a red-green minority. The red-greens have around 35%, while the CDU has~ 30%.
If the CDU sees itself as the majority, that only makes sense if they’re counting the AfD. Merz now sees his party and those to its right as the true majority.

Merz and CDU seem to not have understood how multiple-party representative democracy works. If you can pass a certain proposal only with the votes of a non-democratic extremist party, this should signal to you that the whatever-proposal is not democratic. And the FDP goes along. This is a dark day.

I’m honestly puzzled as to why conservative parties ignore the ample research showing that when they adopt extremist positions, they fail to lure voters from those parties and instead normalize them. By proposing a hardline stance on migration, Merz is merely benefiting the AfD.

I feel seen in this AEJ issue!
The paper "How Do You Say Your Name? Difficult-to-Pronounce Names and Labor Market Outcomes" shows that name difficulty is negatively related to the probability of landing an academic or tenure-track position.
The November 2024 issue of AEJ: Economic Policy (16, 4) is now available online at aeaweb.org/issues/782.
