Theories about metastereotype deal with the existence and content of beliefs about how one's group is perceived by others. Theories about stereotype threats, as refined by these sources, focus on a specific reaction to a salient metastereotype and its subsequent negative consequences.

If the fundamental concept of metastereotypes (the belief about how an out-group perceives one's own group) were to "collapse" or be disproven, it would remove the initial cognitive input required for stereotype threat to manifest.
