When you aren’t finding the inspiration to do something important, find something more important to do than that. Then do this less important thing as an excuse to not do the more important thing.

Crackdown on immigrants and the job crisis have made this year by far one of the most terrible. Imagine the anxiety of March-April 2020 but stretched out with no signs of abating. And it has amplified all sorts of personal anxieties too. If you feel the same way, know that at least I see you!

I ask Farah if he experienced personal anxiety as he prepared for his Indian stay. No, he says: “Even at that young age, I had the belief that Somalians were special and that I would be able to make my way in the world.”

so many peoples' problem with Zohran is that they are inventing a confrontational class war political approach that he never, ever offered and being mad he's not secretly more radical than he pretended to be as if it's a betrayal

Silicon Valley firms make windfall profits while we are forced to live in a world that will face social and political instability and stagnating living standards due to social media, AI, and tech monopolies. Forget the bailouts, these are the real cases of “Privatized profits, socialized losses”

The whole of Silicon Valley, including ordinary professionals, live in a constant state of collective psychosis where they readily believe their own delusions about the imminent coming and invasion of AI and thus, in a race to catch up, actually make that a frightening reality for all of us

One of the key skills of academic life is to learn how to read people charitably. You need to be able to see the merits of the questions and author raises or their methods even if you have some dispute with their arguments. And also an awareness of how far or deep that disagreement actually is.

I think he is understandably a bit nervous about the meeting with Trump, and he isn’t being as aggressive about it as he has been during the election campaign. And I don’t think that’s a problem, in fact it is exactly what makes Zohran genuine and honest. Sometimes things are going to be hard!

So many visitors to India are all like " I don't want to do touristy things I want to experience life as a local" and then claim they're bored when they have to just stay indoors all day to avoid the sun and catch up with ppl at the park in the evening to insult the prime minister
People who feel bad at being called tourists are without doubt the most tedious people on earth to get stuck next to on a plane and it isn't close to close
Tourists are an interesting group in that they consistently deny what we all know they are. I can’t think of anything that screams tourist more than reducing each experience down to charm bracelet size and wearing it around. If tourism is your thing, just embrace it!

John Oliver is so good at doing episodes on the most obscure stuff that you realize is actually really serious. Like a felony murder where you can be charged even if you didn’t commit a murder; half the prison population serving life terms in some states are on felony murder charges.
