This is very good. I'm becoming quite a fan of Thompson.
1. Social media is now 5% following friends and 95% watching videos made by strangers.
2. Every podcast is turning into a YouTube show.
3. AI companies can't stop building TikTok clones.

Everything is becoming television.

I wrote about why that matters.

By coincidence, re-watched this on Tuesday with son and his girlfriend (early 20s). Stands up really well, all the better for watching it now outside the 2009 ocean of regular Thick Of It viewing. So Tucker felt fresh again, and I felt freer to hate Olly. The Gen Zs laughed almost as much as me.
BONUS EPISODE OUT NOW!

Today's bonus ep is on David’s favourite political film (if favourite means comfort-viewing!). Armando Iannucci’s In The Loop (2009), a biting satire of British and American politics in the run-up to the Iraq war.

- ordering meals for 1.

Fantastic article by @dkthomp.bsky.social @theatlantic.com

One addition: it’s not just the US; the world is becoming anti-social 🌏

Excellent conversation between Yascha Mounk and our very own @shikhadalmia.bsky.social.

They talked libertarianism, populism, the political realignment Trump has wrought, older epochs like the one that featured conservatarianism, the nature of progressivism, and more.

In light of Meta recently ditching fact-checking on Facebook in a drive for ‘free speech’, many of us might be questioning the role of fact-checking online. | https://buff.ly/4jajDlD

Fact-checking the fact-checkers

Zuckerberg's about-face on content moderation is a pretty useful lesson for governments. Peter Kyle said government has to treat big tech like nation states because they are so powerful.

But Trump hasn't done that. He demanded they bend the knee and they have. It's worth knowing.

Just starting on Bluesky, let's see how it goes. Hoping it's a home for diversity of thought, and we can avoid meltdowns, or it'll be no better than the other place. Have to start positive 🌞

What Facebook called “fact-checking” was a pale imitation of the real thing, @ibogost.bsky.social writes. Good riddance!
Facebook Is Done Pretending
The social network has given up on fact-checking. That’s a good thing.
