No more fitting metaphor for this moment in America than Gilles Barbier’s 2002 wax sculptures of aging superheroes, L’Hospice, at Miami’s WAREhouse. Took these in spring 2024 and have been thinking about them ever since. We have no superheroes, only ourselves.
The best.

A week before Christmas, maybe 10 days, if we’re feeling festive, but we never feel festive.
Do you wait until after Thanksgiving for your lights and tinsel? Or do you put them up as soon as you can? Block Club Chicago readers weigh in. blockclubchi.co/4o5l2vf

Listen up, Chicago.
Happy Thanksgiving! The #MWRD is grateful for the opportunity to serve over 5 million people today & everyday!

A friendly reminder to avoid pouring Fats, Oils, or Grease down the drain this #Thanksgiving. Instead, let FOG cool, then scrape or wipe them safely into the trash.

Whhhhyyyyyyy?
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

I lost my daughter to cancer, something no doctor said we could have prevented. Knowing that there are kids dying today and that their deaths are entirely preventable is such a gut punch to me. Vaccinate your kids. End of story.
People love to minimize these;
"Just 3 pertussis deaths."
"Just 3 measles deaths."
"COVID deaths are rare in kids"

At some point it is ok (actually, required) to say: "we should prevent kids from dying if we have the tools to do so. And we do. Vaccines."

The Chicago Way.
As CBP agents menaced Chicago area residents, caravans of protesters followed, honking their horns and blowing whistles...Protesters decked their vehicles out in anti-ICE flags, or scrawled things like “Bovino, you a BITCH” on the back windows of their pickup trucks.

A very worthwhile read about Mavis Staples, Tom Waits, and our beautiful and sometimes heartbreaking Chicago.
By me:
A spirited Mavis Staples cover of Tom Waits‘s “Chicago” gives @robertloerzel.bsky.social reason to muse on music, migration, and our city.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.
