When I look at the biggest values and busts in fantasy football each year, I look at them versus ADP expectation. That is, how many points we'd expect that player to score at his price versus how many he actually scored. This is based on how players have scored since 2014.

I did a lot of research last summer on yards per route run at running back, and how poor previous-season YPRR rates tend to lead to underwhelming performances the following year among middle-round RBs.
