It was good to be at this well attended @environmentappg.bsky.social @islamicrelief.bsky.social meeting this evening. Muslim & other faith communities have such an important part to play in campaigning against climate change & for climate justice.

Katie White MP: three options for the UK, don’t invest in our crumbling energy system & risk blackouts; invest in fossil fuels & bake in energy dependency & climate change; & or invest in a clean, secure, affordable energy system. Which one does Claire Coutinho want? #GAevent

Great to hear Katie White accentuate the positive - change is happening & the UK is doing a good job on getting off coal & reducing emissions. #GAevent

Great to be at the @environmentappg.bsky.social & @relondon.bsky.social event showcasing some great circular businesses - there’s so much to do on repair, reuse & re manufacturing!

Quite a big anti-racism protest in Rochester, with some incisive slogans. Charles Dickens says, “Down with this sort of thing.” Indeed. The racists & English nationalists are massively outnumbered (I hope they’re not elsewhere in Medway, putting up yet more flags…).

Jacinda Ardern brings the climate debate back to basics: for some climate states, it’s about whether they will exist at all in a few decades’ time.

Pedro Sanchez, Spanish PM: “We cannot make a trade off between defence & international aid.”

Keir Starmer refers to the far right march, which “sent a shiver down the spine” & (referring to Reform) says “we’re in a battle for the soul of this country about what sort of country we want to be.” More of this, please

Good to hear the PM stress the importance of clean, homegrown energy to ensuring energy security & independence, as well as tackling the (huge) challenge of climate change.

It’s great to be at @libdems.org.uk conference “climate and nature day”. It would be good to see a similar focus from the other parties, rather than Reform’s climate denial, the Tories’ opposition to climate action & the chancellor’s indifference to nature. @ldnc-uk.bsky.social

Good to hear @marycreagh.bsky.social’s upbeat introduction to @wclnews.bsky.social’s impressive Wild Summit. Nature, she says, underpins our economy. I hope others in government understand this.

Cath Smith, @green-alliance.org.uk’s head of social impact sets out how money is poorly directed in the current system & a social tariff would have much more impact. Read the report on the Green Alliance website. green-alliance.org.uk/wp-content/u...

Good to hear David Buttress, Ovo CEO, at the launch of @green-alliance.org.uk’ new report on social tariffs, sponsored by Ovo. His plea: join the Social Tariff Alliance to lift people out of poverty.

Fascinating titbit from Pete Betts's memoir about No.10 officials during David Cameron's premiership opposing sensible policies because they "lived in terror of the Daily Mail and other elements of the rightwing press". Plus ca change.

"Sam Hall, director of the Conservative Environment Network, warned that Badenoch was putting her party on a collision course with not just Labour & the British public but the laws of physics." Nice line & a good piece on those attacking climate action.

Thanks to @newstatesman.com for publishing my letter on how parts of the centre left have bought the idea that all we need to solve the housing crisis is to weaken the planning system. More on the idea of planning liberalisation as a panacea in this blog: greenallianceblog.org.uk/2025/01/30/w...

“Diplomacy is not just about talking, it’s also about acting. And that’s why the UK must retain leadership position… And if we don’t lead, some other country will” - James Cleverly to the Conservative Environment Network.

"We made those commitments in our manifesto and we stick to them. All of the manifesto commitments that we made were fully costed and fully funded" - Rachel Reeves this morning. Good news for the Warm Homes Plan ahead of the spending review. Manifesto commitment 👇

"Is Labour a party of urban progressives, the net zero-supporting, pro-immigration graduate class, or of the working-class labour interest for whom it was founded to represent?" Interesting framing by Jason Cowley. I wonder what he thinks?

Ah, the "mad dash to net zero", introduced by a Conservative government and committed to in the 2024 Conservative manifesto ("we are proud of our record..."). www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...

“Whatever the polling says, Liberal Democrats care about the environment. It’s who we are”, says @eddavey.libdems.org.uk. Fortunately the voters also care. It’s who they are. #LDNC
