Our enterprising technology teacher did build a personalised response system comprising 30 boxes connected by wires back to his desk and an array of lights. Very cool.

I never had the pleasure of using a language lab. EdTech in my school was one teletype terminal for the school where we typed programs in FORTRAN then the teacher put the paper tape in the post and we received the printed error messages a week later (yes, really).

That's how I learned to code - I learned the George 4 language on a teaching machine before I had ever seen or used a computer.

Building well-conceived tools for students on an open foundation model with user data remaining within the institution is a good thing. Training a large language model at huge cost for each state isn't.
