I don't think I want to watch the episode, though. This country has an epidemic of gun violence, and it's just too hard to think about sometimes.

Eerily familiar to what we lived through with the Vegas mass shooting in 2017.

So basically, we owe the history of Pi to some smart mathematicians with sexy brains.

Happy Pi Day!!

But who first called it Pi? How did we land on that Greek letter to represent this irrational number? (Who here thinks irrational numbers are.... okay, I'll stop!) It was first introduced to the world of math by William Jones in 1706, and popularized by Leonard Euler in 1737.

He's probably most famous for figuring out how to calculate the area of an irregular object. But he also was the first person to accurately calculate Pi in written history. At around 250 BCE. He used some fun geometry to do it. (Who here thinks geometry is... oh, never mind)

Enter the Greeks. (Cue Grecian theme music)

Ever heard of Archimedes? He's only THE most famous mathematician of antiquity! (Who here thinks mathematicians of antiquity are sexy? Just me?)

Then there's Egypt. A papyrus from about 1650 BCE has an ancient mathematical formula for Pi (who here thinks historical math papyrus is sexy? Just me?) of 3.1605. We're getting closer

One historical ancient Babylonian mathematical tablet (who here thinks historical Babylonian math tablets are sexy? Just me?) That put the value at 3.125, which is a lot closer.

There's historical math from ancient Babylon showing that they calculated the area of a circle by taking three tmes the square of its radius, which was a value of 3.

I'm good! Trying to weather this storm of stupidity as best as I can
