They had kids, too.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.

I refuse to play along when a child is pretending. “Oh, the phone is for me? Reality check, idiot. That’s a banana.”

Kids in horror movies are always named Rylan or Ellie and they creep the fuck out of you by drawing a family picture with an extra person and then saying, “That’s Mr. Jiggleshoes. He’s bleeding. He’s my best friend.”

The Mr. Rogers advice for moments of crisis is a useful thing to remember right now.

Look for the helpers.

Look for the people organizing to protect the most vulnerable.

Look for the people who have been concretely planning for how to respond, and are ready to implement.

Join them, if you can.

All the worst people in the world want you to feel like you’re powerless right now and every normal person is pretty powerless in a system set up the way it is but we always have been, you’re definitely not powerless in the lives of people you love and care for
