Dear Politics & History Section Members, After several years at the helm, Shamira Gelbman has stepped down as our trusted Clio editor. I will do my best to fill her shoes! I am now accepting submissions for the Winter 2025-26 issue of Clio, which will be circulated in January. While anything of reasonable length and interest to the section will be considered, the following are especially welcome: Op-ed style pieces that lend historical perspective to current events Research notes, especially those that highlight new historical data sources or methodological approaches Pedagogical innovations and reflections on teaching politics and history Member news and announcements In addition, if you or someone you know has recently published a first book, please let me know so that we can arrange to feature it in the “First Books” section. If you have ideas for regular features you'd like to see in future issues of the newsletter (e.g. book reviews and responses; "state of the field" roundtables; teaching notes; etc.) please pass them along as I think about how to ensure that Clio remains a relevant and engaging forum for the section. i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist

the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.

This is exactly the same argument — and, in parts, even the same language — that segregationists advanced to argue that white people had a “right” not to live next to people who were different from them.

For we live today in an atmosphere of crisis and with a mixed sense of frustration and urgency. And although the tenseness about us is amply justified by events at home and abroad, it carries with it grave dangers. For its basis is fear and fear may easily lead to confusion and a feeling of helplessness. And above all, there is danger in fear, because, inevitably following it, come persecution, intolerance, misplaced zeal and cruelty. There are many things to be afraid of in the world today. But they are real things, to be countered by purposeful action. If we are afraid of an enemy air force- we build planes. If we are afraid of Congressman So and So - we organize to defeat him. If we are afraid of losing our democracy - we prepare to preserve it. But vague fears, which have no relation to the facts of our crisis, serve only to intensify existing insecurities and hatreds of which we have all too many. America, we should remember, is the home of lynching. We have more national minorities than any other country. Social competition is intense and, even now, the impact of economic change is only thinly cushioned. To this we have added the effects of a twelve year depression. All these hatreds and all these insecurities are fuel for jingoistic hysteria. For eight years Fascism has warred upon the world ... And yet many people in this country still refuse to understand the nature of Fascism ...

I was at my old high school today, for the first time in over twenty years, to talk to the teachers about how their curriculum can better support students. AI came up, and so many teachers were saying "Well it's a tool, they have to know how to use it, it's the future so we have to accept it!"
