Seattle-based nonprofit builder of transitional tiny homes for our homeless neighbors as alternatives to tents and encampments while they await permanent housing.

Thought we’d move on over here where there’s a little less shouting. We’re all about sheltering our neighbors - less talking, more doing. We’ve now built 580 of our tiny homes, and counting, since we began in 2018. Open to all good ideas and constructively offered criticism.
On Oct. 28, around 6a, a man sleeping next to a dumpster in Seattle's Eastlake neighborhood was killed when he was accidentally crushed by a garbage truck. He was probably there to try to stay safe, tucked out of the way.

When will we have enough?

Hotel or food. What a choice.
“Families are falling into homelessness because housing costs have risen far faster than wages...” says Dr. Margot Kushel. “The evidence is clear: most people who experience homelessness are long-time members of their communities who can no longer afford a place to live.
A Family's Odyssey: The Minivan Becomes Home in Long Quest for Housing
“Either it was hotels or it was food,” Angelica Rodriguez said. “Our decision was to stop staying at hotels because we weren’t having enough food. That was the main thing, the kids being fed.”

…and interestingly, “New drug use began for 27% after becoming homeless, suggesting homelessness itself is a driving factor for some.” Get folks off the streets quicker and prevent these xtra barriers from developing. #tinyhomesforthehomeless #HomelessnessSolutikns

Former Speaker Chopp was a giant who fought for minnows. Our world needs more Frank Chopps, not fewer. Condolences to his friends and family.
We at the Economic Opportunity Institute, along with so many others, mourn the loss of former State Representative Frank Chopp.

Rain is back and so are 40 deg. temps. Meanwhile, we're turning out warm, safe, & dry #tinyhomesforthehomeless that, when paired with supportive services, have been moving roughly 60% of folks who leave into permanent housing, and keeping 98.5% of them housed one year later. #HomelessnessSolutions

At SFNW, we lean neither left nor right. We are laser-focused on a desired, effective, and affordable solution to unsheltered homelessness. We support the goal for LOTS more permanent affordable housing, but that there ALSO needs to be a short term alternative.

We start from the belief that NOBODY deserves to sleep outside. It’s a travesty in the richest country in the world that we tolerate our neighbors suffering in leaky tents, lawless encampments, and unsafe rv’s when safe, dignified, and fiscally responsible options exist. #tinyhomesforthehomeless

What’s the holdup to more tiny home villages? First identifying an appropriate and available site, then secondary steps, like these zoning changes. Kudos to Pierce Co. Council for opening new avenues to shelter!
