It's difficult to properly articulate how impactful of a release it was in 1998.
Would Zelda work in 3D? Would it translate as well as Mario 64 had? At launch, it was clear Nintendo made a masterpiece.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka were both credited as "Senior Supervisors" on Mario & Luigi Brothership.
They both had that distinction on Princess Peach: Showtime too.
Even if someone other than Nintendo is making Mario games, they both still need to check in!
