I just got a PhD in experimental cosmology. Now I'm a high school physics teacher because working for Raytheon wasn't really my vibe.

That's the thing about reality. No matter how much you know about it, it's still right there!
Oh, not witnessing a Shakespearean level of politics unfold in real time in my nation of birth, where I currently reside and pay taxes, sick in bed for weeks in a dissociative mononucleosis fog? Cool, yes, this sure is an experience to have.

After the earth dies, some 5 billion years from now, after it's burned to a crisp, or even swallowed by the Sun, there will be other worlds and stars and galaxies coming into being -- and they will know nothing of a place once called Earth.

Lol jk I have mononucleosis
People often assume that I can do things most people find easy because I'm "so smart." That's actually not how any of this works. I genuinely don't understand how anyone can do anything at all. I'm fully at sea over here.

Autistic people everywhere are begging you: this, but toothpaste. Please.

Society is going to "collapse" when we all lose access to money due to a global server outage caused by a large solar flare. There will be a limited cash economy where 20s are like singles. Trade will be done in alternative currencies or directly in commodities or labor.

It turns out I was right when I was seven years old. *My Neighbor Totoro* actually is the best movie ever made.

Please excuse me, I have been taken by a demon (Epstein-Barr Virus)

Today hardly any of my 11th graders had ever heard of the North Star. Fewer still already knew how the night sky moved when they walked into the classroom. Why are we humans separating ourselves from this knowledge?
October 20, 2025 at 7:33 PM
People need to look at the night sky more. They need to understand how the sky works. If one thing horrifies me about today's lifestyle, it's that we don't look at the sky nearly enough. Our minds need that.

I'm just gonna say it: I kinda like Avi Loeb. He's an absolute nut case, but I think it's important that *somebody* thinks about this stuff. There's nothing supernatural about the idea of aliens, and we should always consider alternate hypotheses until they can be disproven.

I have been using gpt 5 for a few days now, and it really does strike me as significantly smarter than the gpt 4 family. A lot of people were angry that openai removed access to 4o, and I genuinely think that the company is assuming that people want to talk to a smarter interlocutor. They don't.

I knew it was coming, but I'm still heartbroken. I saw him speak at MIT once. A personal hero and inspiration.

Ooh, fun game! The furthest I've been:

N: Perth, Australia
E: Perth, Australia
S: Perth, Australia
W: Perth, Australia

It's pretty close to the antipode of where I live, see. If you go any direction far enough, you'll get pretty close to Perth, Australia. Nice town.
Furthest I’ve been:

N: Reykjavík, Iceland
E: Tallinn, Estonia
S: Atlanta, Georgia
W: Zion Canyon, Utah
I'm lame and don't go many places; 2 of these were on high school trips, but...

N: Montreal, Canada
E: Dublin, Ireland, I guess?
S: Nassau, the Bahamas
W: Las Vegas, NV
