The tried and trusted "Well, at least I tried!" - WALIT - ploy. I've had too much success with this one. So much so, it's started to not work.

Just compare the current president with a former president like, say, Barak Obama. Which of these men would you characterise as being happy with his wife and his life? Which of these men is spiteful, angry, dishonest and unfaithful? Which of them whines constantly about his treatment by the press?

I think it also has to do with Trump being a conduit for their hatred. He is going after all those who threaten their identity: immigrants, trans people, people of colour, etc. They gloss over his sins because we are all sinners and he hates all the right people.
