Thatcher wouldn’t have dared make the changes he did, but he realised the voting public wouldn’t know or care about the devil in the detail.

It made it much easier for the next lot of Tories to continue the work, introducing even more privatisation through the back door.

Never trust a neoliberal.

Quite, which is precisely why I like the word optics so much. To me it says something very specific which is unrelated to whether a policy is a good idea or not!

Oh no, I do - he drove waiting lists down, built infrastructure and improved efficiency.

Unfortunately, he did it by saddling the NHS with PFI debts, and wrote into the legislation loopholes that allowed parts of the services to be sold off or contracted out for private profit.

Very clever work.

To be fair, Blair started the ball rolling with dismantling it, and Streeting and Starmer show no signs of slowing the demolition, so they wouldn’t be entirely wrong.

It’s amazing they haven’t considered the optics, though!

Yes, it’s a toss up between the impact of poverty and that of an unmitigated airborne pandemic.

As far as child mortality goes, poverty probably wins. The number of children in the UK dying where being homeless directly contributed to their death is a similar number to child Covid deaths.

Yes, but I’d expect that from Bristol.

One individual may not represent the hospital, and it sounds like he wasn’t following their policies, for a start. I’d wait and see how they respond to the complaint first.
