I think this must be because that also describes most US politicians, and they simply cannot believe that anyone would actually posses a sense of decency or selflessness, so folks who seem to are actually just performatively virtue signaling (because that's what they do).

I think someone's willingness and ability to confidently sell ideas that people want to believe is what best qualifies them as a cult leader. That sounds like Weiss to me

I share your disbelief, but cult-grade charisma doesn't always translate well over photos and text. Most of my teenage friends were members of a cult founded by the late L. Ron Hubbard, and I'm still astounded at that.
