The Acknowledgments page for my upcoming vampire horror novella, It Came from the Floodwaters.
Sometimes, a story turns out different from what you originally envisioned. When I first sat down to write It Came from the Floodwaters, I did so with the intention of writing an ultraviolet splatterpunk story. When I completed the first draft, I was surprised to realize that I had instead written something closer to the Gothic end of the horror spectrum. In retrospect, this should not have surprised me. Looking at the completed novella, it’s obvious to me that there were three major literary influences at play here. While one of those influences, Chasers by Eve Harms and Mariah Darling, is a recent indie splatterpunk story, the other two, Dracula by Bram Stoker and The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker, are firmly Gothic tales. What can I say? I love Gothic horror. As a character, Tam presented a special challenge for me, being a protagonist very far removed my own lived experience. It was important to me that they felt authentic, and to that end I want to thank my friend Frankie for serving as a sensitivity reader, and I would like to thank as well the membership of a certain Discord server, who gave me helpful feedback on the excerpts I posted there. It's hungry, it's patient, and it has all night long to kill every last one of them.

Fun fact: this design was a happy accident. I painted a vampire skull in Krita, and I wasn't super happy with the result. When I imported it to GIMP to make the cover, I started fiddling with the color settings, pushed the contrast up way too high, and then shouted "holy shit!" when I saw the result

Iarius had seen combat before. He had witnessed men marching to battle, songs on their lips, and watched as those same lips expelled their final breaths. He had seen blood spilled in honorable duels and in cowardly ambushes, seen mighty warriors reduced to simpering children as their lives bled out from their battle-wounds. As a slave, he'd see men beaten and whipped by their masters, been forced to watch torturous executions where the condemned took days to die as a warning to others. At the Acadaemium, he'd chronicled the exploits of soldiers, and he'd left Remura with his head full of songs of glory. But Iarius had seen soldiers put down uprisings, seen simple tavern brawls spill over into riots. Bit by bit, those glorious songs that had once filled his head were replaced by the screams of dying men and the sharp notes of blade sliding into flesh. Yes, Iarius ex Maritoris was a man who had seen combat, and who now harbored no illusions about it. He recognized it as the base, horrible thing it was, a necessary evil that must taint the soul of every man, no matter how noble, who engages in the act. That youth who'd once dreamed of glory had matured into a man who knew that warfare was ugly and vile, the terrible price we pay for peace, justice, and prosperity. But now, standing on that mountain, watching as Nessalir the Red faced down the Equine Centuria, Iarius saw that combat could be something else as well. It could be beautiful.

Starting the last chapter, which will likely be the longest. I'm guessing the draft will end up around 25k words, and then the final post-revision text will be close to 30k.

So, here in Virginia Beach, these signs have been popping up all over the city. And they seem serious, right? There's a referendum to take away our voting rights? What could it be? We need to protect our rights!

Thinking once again about the obscure X-Men side character, Bernard the Poet, whose first appearance consists of what may be one of the all time greatest Stan Lee dialogue exchanges:
A beatnik performs poetry while a woman dances and other beatnik plays bongos. The poet says: "Like it's out to be in, and it's square to be hip, I mean dig the scene, a nap isn't a nip!" The dancing woman replies: "Say it again, Bernard! Those tender sentiments do wonders for my libido!" And the bongo player scolds her: "Cool it, chick! You're melting my bongos!"

I could be with her and Lacy and Rhea, and I could be cuddled up on the couch with them and their dogs, and in the morning we could go out to feed the chickens and I could listen to them talk about Goldman and Parsons and debate whether or not Chomsky is a sellout. "You need anything, you call Gertie, alright?" Heather's voice said. Gertie was another partner, another girlfriend. Unlike Khloe, she'd built a relationship with both Heather and Tam. "She's tough, and she'll take care of you." "She doesn't even live in the city," Tam pointed out. Gertie had a little farm with her two main girlfriends, each of whom had partners as well. The intricate webs formed by lesbian polycules occasionally made Tam's head spin, and they admired how Heather and Gertie had no trouble keeping everything straight. Well, no, none of it was straight. That was kind of the point. "She's got a bigass truck; she can come to you if she needs to," said Heather. "Look, me and Khloe have a late dinner. Stay safe, Tam, alright? Love you."
