My parents only made sure I was reading books that were challenging enough. That included a polite but reprimanding letter to a teacher and filling out forms at school libraries to give me access to all shelves. After that they left me to it.

So I appreciate the Dramatis Personae at the start of Empire of the Dawn but its main effect has been to convince me to reread Empire of the Vampire.

Editing is a lot of time spent putting a comma in, thinking carefully, then taking the comma back out.

Strange New Worlds writers: Let's do a horror episode that's a riff on Alien with chest-bursters and hunting through the dark corridors of a ship and the aliens are murderous Gorn hatchlings.

So I just ... CAN'T buy Glen Cook's The Black Company series in ebook format in the UK? I've got the original trilogy, but the rest just doesn't seem to be available. Am I doing something wrong? How can THIS series not be available?

Which one of us will break first? Me or FB as I try to upload a page banner that doesn't end up fuzzy?

Also on Strange New Worlds, I'm very much enjoying the episodic with ongoing character arcs structure. Let's them really go out there with each episode, be creative in a way Star Trek should be. Wouldn't work without the good character writing and excellent acting from the cast.

I'm late to Strange New Worlds. Great fun so far. Just watched the episode in the first season that's "holodeck malfunction without a holodeck". The cast must have had so much trouble not cracking up on set.

In the spirit of you must do something badly for a while before you learn to do it well, here we go...
