There's a not-for-profit group here trying to support older people who don't want to leave their home but don't need all the space. The idea is that the house is reconfigured into a space for them & another for someone else. They get to stay, have a rental income and some company (if they wish)

I've no idea how you're going to disentangle yourself from the mass of contradictions.
Apples are apples, oranges are oranges and context matters.
Who knew this needed explaining.

Maybe unmute him and revisit this in a few days.

Oh you brought Mr G into this.

See what I mean. But you just don't want to be rounding forward too much because when you start the pull from the catch, it will cause some overload on your lower back that you'll repeat over and over.

Just a way to keep it more interesting for the first while. In terms of technique, try to sit upright without needing to be straight. Think of sitting up off the back pockets on a pair of jeans. If your back is rounded, your ass rolls back onto the pockets. You'll have to do that on a chair to (3/n)

Start with something like a work:rest ratio of 1:2 where you go at a faster pace for say 1 minute and then row easy to recover for 2 minutes and then go hard again for 1 minute. Rinse and repeat. Over time you can start to change the ratio...maybe it goes to 1:1.5, then 1:1 then 1.5:1, 2:1...(2/n)
August 27, 2025 at 10:20 PM
I've had to do more core work so that I don't have back issues exacerbated by rowing (bulging disks). Ultimately, you just want to increase your pace, ie be able to do more in the same time. Along with doing 20 mins and increasing what you do, you can look at using intervals too (1/n)

I've wondered who messaging should be aimed at. I have never really engaged with climate deniers because they are largely entrenched. But is that allowing them to spread nonsense unchallenged to people who are open to listening and who would be receptive to scientific realities

There's a theory in behavioural economics known as 'hyperbolic discounting'. People do not assign the same value to things a long time in the future.
Similarly with things that will affect other people more than them.
That said, you'll not convince some people regardless.
June 1, 2025 at 2:42 PM
They do but in a world where some will argue that the worst effects of climate change will happen elsewhere and that is not a UK problem, they will still argue that a global GDP benefit doesn't mean a UK GDP benefit. An "I'm alright, Jack" mindset
May 31, 2025 at 10:44 PM
I would say that people who say it is too expensive will point to the fact that it is global GDP and they're more interested in their own country's GDP.
But it looks to be based primarily on reducing costs of extreme weather events, reducing health costs & growth in green industry

There is a practical limit to it though. That said, I'm not suggesting heat loss is the main driver in performance but it is a factor.
I'd love it if the same kind of data harvested from the EoH study could be derived from the HPs on the heatpump monitor site
May 29, 2025 at 6:57 PM
Heat loss has a role in the efficiency because it will impact flow temperature.
I would agree that it doesn't reflect what should be the norm, but there is heatpumpmonitor.org for that.
The EoH study does allow for some interesting analysis on principles though.

I went and had a look and saw some very confident people proclaim that it would defy the laws of physics for a heat pump to be more than 100% efficient.

Some "comedians" would have mentioned you have a little withered hand, like Jeremy Beadle.

I didn't mention it. No need.

The electrification of heat study had median COP of 2.90 for pre-1919 homes, albeit with a sample size of 35.
Another 50 in the 1919-1944 band w/ median of 2.84.
Heritage homes may be difficult but newer heat pumps with newer refrigerant can perform efficiently in older houses with higher heat loss

The Heat Study published here maybe 3 years ago was very clear about the fastest, most effective way of meeting emissions reduction targets - decarbonising heating.
