Another example of why you can’t trust AI. I was looking for the origin of “Waffle House brawl” and the summary describes the same event, with Halie Booth catching a chair one handed, in Sep 2021 and Dec 2022.

Such a great source photo! I feel every time I see a picture that uses it as model, it should be the start of a chain of pictures that also use it as a model.

Three months in the new job, working to level up my leadership skills to meet new challenges.

Also trying to sustain creative pastimes outside of work that make me feel grounded. Trying for 4 sketches x 4 days x 4 weeks, almost made week 1 and it’s an interesting view of my developing style.

Looking back through some old studies from a time when I was dissatisfied with my figure drawings and tried my hand at landscapes. This one is I think better than I remembered.

Starting a new very busy job means little energy for myself and my hobbies these past few weeks. But I did some sketching that I’m happy with today, (on a work day today at the end of a demanding week, with my family in the middle of very serious flooding).

Technically, yes, on the beach. But in meaningful culturally significant ways, not on the beach.

The AI generated label on this photo from a vacation in the German Alps is why we should not just trust AI.

I’ve come across these two quotes recently of mid-20th century liberal conservatives thinking. One become an Australian PM. The other writing recently to a news paper. The abhorrence of public good that has metastasised in modern politics, left and right, is so strange when you look little way back.

I value the reputation that earned me this leaving gift from my last job. It frustrates me that such a reputation might make a leader stand out.

Finished (for now), study based on a Mucha original. About 2.5 hours work. About 11x26cm. Quite fun and satisfying to do, so I might try a few more things like it.

WIP Study of a Mucha original. This is about an hour’s work, graphite on toned paper, about 10x26cm.

I’m happy with how it’s going and now need to finish it more contrast and highlighting with white chalk. Better to do more pieces than overwork fewer.

Bad multi-tasking: Saturday morning YouTube, drinking coffee, sketching faces from YouTube thumbnails.

I promised myself less video binging and more creating. This is a poor substitute.

And when you look at thumbnails, motivated to find sketch models, it’s shocking how many feature Musk or Trump.

Low moods, doom scrolling, too often alone after months unemployed, blocked starting work waiting for overseas record checks.

Savings ruined but feel like spending to lift my mood.

Drawing with art videos in the background has been the best distraction. These are straight copies or from reference.

I fret about drawing just from reference, when I want to be storytelling in pictures. I figured try to draw like Emilio Alcala and his simple dynamic figures from imagination. Just have a go. I’m quite happy, these are 5 minute sketches but strong frames for more work, and 3 in a row consistent too.

Trying an overlay layer technique from a @timmcburnie.bsky.social video that creates this wonderful line that has hue when light but tends to black when darker. The greater variety in the line makes it easy to stay with one brush and colour while working from sketch to picking key lines. I love it!

Last Procreate pictures for a while. I’ll be trying to get my Clip Studio Paint workflow up to speed. I’m trying to get away from doing 10 things at once and that means getting away from habits like sitting with various things on the computer and iPad in my hands at the same time.

The bases are just flat wraps, find a brand that’s a bit doughy as I think that stays more substantial after the oven. Also chili flakes on one.

I spend more of my time on figure drawing, but I think landscape painting is more relaxing, and I generally produce a more finished painting. My aspiration is narrative illustration so both figures and settings matter.

My YouTube history is full of art and guitar channels, progressive political commentary, and some history, science, and table top gaming stuff. That's what I watch there.

They just put as a top row suggestion a 13 year old video obviously seeking to demonise Aboriginal Australians.

Set myself a challenging pose to sketch and I’ve reached that point in the process where I think it’s got good bones, proportions and placement seem good, overall topic is fun. And while it’s early, I feel like there are so many ways to make it worse that I ought to leave it like this…
February 22, 2025 at 5:48 AM
Gesture sketches of 2-3 minutes per figure with a break to set up the next reference like those on these sheets feel so relaxed compared to doing 20 pics x 60 or 90 seconds no breaks in quickposes.com

About an hour’s work in these two pages. Third attempt at the old fellow. I tend to draw the same reference several times because I find I learn so much more that way. #sketchbook #sketches

Ten minute studies, call them 15 minutes with later touch ups.

I’m coming to the end of this sketchbook after about a year, and I’m pleased with the growth it shows. I’ll do a bit of a review when I reach the end, probably the end of this week.

In my work I’ve been a staunch fighter for equality issues. Colleagues gave me this pen when I left a seven year role in 2023. So when I see Meta and Amazon winding back their DEI initiatives, I have opinions.
January 11, 2025 at 1:35 AM
Simple sketch, I like the proportions and facial features. In the 80:20 stakes this should probably be hands off now. But, but, but, I could do so much more to refine and polish it. No, no, no, move on, lessons learned, now do the next thing.
