Vancouver was named after Captain George Vancouver (1757- 1798), a Britsh explorer. His ancestors came from the Dutch city of Coevorden. The family name changed into Vancouver after his greatgrandfather moved to England. Coevorden means “cow crossing", like Bosporus or Oxford.🐄

Known as the "one-eyed ghost" he was one of only three soldiers in the British Commonwealth to receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal twice in separate wars.

There are numerous streets in the Netherlands named after Canadian liberators. Well known ones such as General Crerar but also less well known ones. Near my home is the resting place of 32 Canadians who fell during Operation Market Garden. My mother was liberated by Canadians ...
