As a Canadian married to an American, I cannot begin to describe the fear this generates in me.

I’ve known *Dean* Deeks for nearly a decade and I couldn’t be more excited to see her take on this role. She’ll be an outstanding vice dean and UVA is lucky to have her!

Courage is contagious.

Grateful to the Harvard Law faculty members who spearheaded a similar letter recently, to the 150 UVA School of Law students who walked out of classes last week, and to the 70 members of the @uvalaw.bsky.social faculty who have signed this letter.
I’m proud to join nearly 70 of my Virginia Law colleagues—from myriad fields, political backgrounds, and ideologies—to affirm our commitment to core rule-of-law principles and to express our deep concerns about the administration’s actions that undermine them.

Deeply sad time to be a Canadian living in the United States.
Carney: "The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over."

I’m told this is a real letter. It basically says, “We’ll destroy Columbia unless you destroy it first.”

The Republican budget bill is "a terrible option," Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, writes in a guest essay. But "the risk of allowing the president to take even more power via a government shutdown is a much worse path."

A government shutdown would lead to real pain for the American people.

Am I first in line for @leahlitman.bsky.social’s new book on Libby AND going to buy it from P&P?

An excellent thread.
There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

Incredibly moving Justin Trudeau remarks:

"We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people....Canadians are a little perplexed as to why our closest friends and neighbors are choosing to target us."

It’s 2024, which means it inexcusable for an online platform to not allow hyphenated last names.

Spoiler alert: I am the legal scholar weighing in
In a new Q. & A. with Isaac Chotiner, a legal scholar weighs in on the benefits and drawbacks of pardoning people in Donald Trump’s crosshairs, the practical difficulties of trying to protect people from him, and whether the pardon power makes sense in 2024.
Are Blanket Pardons for Officials on Donald Trump’s Target List a Good Idea?
As the Biden Administration considers granting clemency to officials singled out by Trump, a legal scholar explains the advantages and pitfalls of extending such protections.

This is a great feature!!
this is one of my favorite custom feeds, Quiet Posters

it shows you posts from people you follow who don't post that much! so it surfaces friends' posts that might otherwise get drowned out in the Following feed (which is reverse chronological) 🤗

I just want to find fun scholarship to read and find out when my baseball or hockey team trade for a fun player.

If an echo provides that, sign me up.
The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

My main takeaway from a week on Bluesky is that Twitter had gotten truly useable by the end and I was on it out of habit not actual utility.
