20th C when even most conservative US Christians were reconciled to an ancient earth & a succession of extinct creatures, if not to evolution per se. Young-earth creationism only took off in a big way since Whitcomb & Morris's 'The Genesis Flood' in 1960.

Fundamentalist Christianity is anti-science from the get-go. "Evolution is Satanic". Also, there literally was a global flood and Noah's ark.
