now this is quite the experimental design - a fly carousel!
1/4 Flies play

In this experiment, some fruit flies preferred to ride a carousel than to eat. The behavior is consistent with the criteria for playing (voluntary, non-essential, non-typical, repeated & flexible, and stress-free)

"Seagrass digestion by a notorious ‘carnivore’"

It's great when science turns public perception on its head. Here, Bonnethead sharks assimilated seagrass in a remarkable finding, a short but remarkable study with broad implications!

Seagrass digestion by a notorious ‘carnivore’ | Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
What an animal consumes and what an animal digests and assimilates for energetic demands are not always synonymous. Sharks, uniformly accepted as carnivores, have guts that are presumed to be well sui...

Today's 📝 is one of my favorite ocean tidbits

"Experimental evidence of pollination in marine flowers by invertebrate fauna."

Invertebrates were found to cross-pollinate marine flowering plants in similar way as 🐝's do on land. Marine pollinators at scale would be amazing.

Experimental evidence of pollination in marine flowers by invertebrate fauna - Nature Communications
Marine plants reproduce by hydrophilly, that is, the movement of pollen by water. Here, the authors show that invertebrates can also carry pollen from male to female Thalassia testudinum plants.

Today's 📝

"Global meta-analysis shows action is needed to halt genetic diversity loss."

The study found genetic diversity of 628 species had an avg effect size of -0.11 (low but significant).

I found the effect size graph across taxa interesting as zooming has more info

Still hope for coral reefs. Using 28-years of data in Seychelles, we find reefs recovering 4-5 years faster from the 2016 bleaching event, than they did after 1998. Also, a reef that had regime-shifted to macroalgae for over 15 years, is recovering to coral.

Increased resilience and a regime shift reversal through repeat mass coral bleaching
Assessing coral reefs across the inner Seychelles islands, using a 28-year dataset, we document faster coral recovery from the 2016 than the 1998 marine heatwave events. Further, a reef that had regi....
