The problem Dems face is they have not visibly resisted as a group. So even (potentially) strategic decisions like this rile the base, which sees quiescence and an unwillingness to confront the nature of the threat.

The MAGA playbook is to eliminate federal funding for low-income kids & give (some) of it to states as block grants instead. Red states will spend it on vouchers, which shift tax dollars from public schools to private/religious schools & benefit well-off parents.
