#WIPSnips 12: I started this years ago and put it aside when I didn't have a subplot. It is from when I wrote much longer descriptions, so, now that I'm working on it again, I may shorten it. Opinions on if that's a good idea are welcome!

I guessed he was in his mid-twenties though his skin already had lines from working outdoors. He was small, not much taller or bigger than I, but I would not have bet against him in a fight. His dark blond hair was pulled back into a pathetically skinny ponytail. He had a full head of hair, but it was so fine it didn’t create much mass. Tattoos covered both tanned arms, disappearing into the sleeves of his red T shirt. Through the holes in his jeans, I could see lines indicating that he hadn’t limited his bodily decorations to his arms. His hands were filthy from working on the car, but I had a suspicion that they didn’t look much cleaner when washed. His bare feet were just as bad with a black widow tattooed on one instep. A couple of real life references which should get more attention: Soul Alley was a real place, and I highly recommend the 2018 documentary of the same name. The magicians at the end, Siegfried and Joy, are also real, and they are hilarious.

When editing, I search for overused words and replace them. It's too early for that in my WIP, so there were too many occurrences of "trail". I kept an early one to show Ron's entitlement and Melanie's insecurity

A gaggle of multi-colored haired college aged kids emerged from a car and made their way across the parking lot. “Nice earrings,” one of them called to Joi. Joi touched one of the silver owls and called back, “Thank you! My wife has good taste.” She then asked me, “You ready to go back there?” “Sure,” I said, steeling myself for more high school memories. Except it wasn't like that. Meg's nursery may have looked the same, but the backyard was filled with a wide swath of people from all walks of life discussing all manner of things. Maxi was already giving a tarot card reading to one of the multi-colored haired kids. Children ran around wildly, but they had enough awareness to avoid damaging the plants. I didn't change anything, but I had fun! It was interesting to see how different people's processes are. (People voluntarily make OUTLINES? I hate outlines so much, when I had to make them for school, I wrote the papers first & then faked the outlines!)

I don't know the genre for my books. They resemble romance but don't follow the tropes and are more about the MC recognizing their true self. A friend said of my 2nd book, "I don't know what it's about. She gets the guy at the end, but that's incidental."

My most prominent side character is the drug dealer, Stash, &, yes, it's acknowledged only he thinks that's a clever nickname. Tania, the person who accidentally changes the MC's worldview, is an Easter egg in the 3rd (in the series but 2nd written) book!

Since I write my ending first, I know my resolution: my MC learns to move forward, consider others, & accept herself. A side character does not change because life isn't fair, & not everyone can be saved no matter how much we want it

I could make my MC's life worse by having her arrested, having her plan be for naught, or having the only person she's started to trust turn on her. I'm doing none of those things, however, because the plot's already super dark as it is
