1 month ago, our 11-yo Lab yelped & broke lame on his right forelimb. My last dog died from osteosarc, so I was sure that was it. Turns out it was an inflamed nerve w/radiated pain in the RFL. Many hospital trips for Dx, MRI + Rx + meds + rest & he is walking & feeling so much better! Toys again!

A wonderful Zoom poetry reading today by @katierpoet.bsky.social, coming at us from Scotland with several remarkable, devastating poems from her new collection, Our Bodies Are Mostly Water (May 2025, Cornerstone Press.) An unforgettable tribute to her late sister & the love they shared.

I won't lie. Prepping a book for publication is stressful! But it's happening, y'all. Bloodstream, my second full-length collection of poems, is in the final stages of proofing. I am so excited! More info about publication ETA & a planned book launch when I'm able to share!

Thrilled to share that I'll be reading from my book, The Grief Committee Minutes, at @thelynxbooks.bsky.social on Oct. 2 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. with Eric Doise, who'll read from his late wife, Saara Raappana's book, Chamber After Chamber. From Gainesville or nearby? Hope you can make it!

"Write it down": My notebook discovery - Sarah K Carey
I never thought I'd say it. A notebook can be a writer's best friend. They can be beautiful, and — had you asked me just over a month ago — I would have said, also completely useless. I was wrong.

Working with a copyeditor on the 1st pages of Bloodstream, my new poetry collection, forthcoming from Mercer U Press in spring-summer 2026! Exciting but stressful, too, coming so close on the heels of my 1st book. If anyone is interested in doing a review, let me know! 🙏🙏

Yesterday, an editor I've worked with in the past, tho not for years, accepted every poem I sent her, including one from my new book, Bloodstream (forthcoming from Mercer U Press in 2026) which I was thrilled to place. It was so validating. Words to savor during the down times.

I first crossed paths with former Alabama poet laureate Jennifer Horne about 5 years ago, when @alinaetc.bsky.social did a joint review of two of our books for the sadly now-defunct New Southern Fugitives journal. We reconnected recently & traded books. Excited for this beauty!

The ordering of a manuscript can be such a challenge! I've heard writers I respect argue that it's really the poems, not the order, that matters, but I tend to group poems both strategically & intuitively. It's so cool when someone pays attention. Thanks again, @mitchnobis.bsky.social !
One hell of a back-to-back by @saycarey1.bsky.social in her book The Grief Committee Minutes.

New head shots! Thanks to GNV photog Adrienne Fletcher & MUA Kara Winslow for always helping me out when I have a need. One of these will hopefully be the author photo for my forthcoming book, Bloodstream. But which one? Up to my publisher & his team to decide...it's in their hands now:)

One of the things I'm proudest of from my career at UF is managing Animal Airwaves, a nationally syndicated 2-part public radio program for 14 years, in partnership our local NPR affiliate, WUFT-FM. I talked about it & the show's history on air last week. Take a listen (& fight for NPR.)

With apologies to all the real poet laureates out there, but with so much gratitude to UF Health writer Bill Levesque for this wonderful article in the latest issue of Florida Veterinarian magazine, which I developed 35 years ago. Only 3 more weeks to retirement! It's bittersweet.
