It's pretty remarkable how relevant It's a Wonderful Life is even 80 years after it was made. So much of it is still 100% applicable. This post brought to you by me sitting here and crying through the end of the movie.

I've been trying to get my version of the Bechdel Test to catch on called the Ballard Metric. It basically asks if the creator was able to work for free or for slave wages due to an invisible financial safety net and recontextualizes the work. (I'm kinda joking idk)
Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.
When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

Every time I have to explain to someone why the first 3 episodes of Wandavision are super important to the show but also great pieces of tv making, it takes two years off my life. :p (Like come ON, the way the first episode swaps from Dick Van Dyke production style to Twilight Zone is SO COOL)

You've probably heard about the buyout of EA Games.

What you didn't hear is that this has likely doomed the company.

Let's talk about the dreaded leveraged buyout and what this long-running business scam means for EA.

To quote the poet André Benjamin, "Forever, forever ever? Forever ever?"

It always belongs to you until it doesn't.
Franchises like Harry Potter and DC are "just for Warner Bros.," CEO David Zaslav said just now. "Those belong to us, and they'll only belong to us forever."

WB currently licenses Harry Potter to Universal parks and DC to Six Flags parks: buff.ly/3EfLhK6

I haven't seen a film in theaters in months, if not over a year. But I had to see "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" in theaters while I still could & it was absolutely worth it. A crazy laugh out loud script, gorgeous hand drawn animation, and a lot of heart. See it now while you can

Friendly reminder that Joann Fabrics isn’t closing because it’s a bad business. It’s closing bc it was bought by a private equity firm. This is also what is happening to Hooters and what happened to US Toys R Us and Red Lobster. These companies are being dismantled intentionally.
