There's a lot of "so wild you'd think it's fake" factoids to come out of the late Edo period in Japan, but one of my favorites is that the first English biographer of Yoshida Shōin, teacher of many future Meiji oligarchs, was Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island.
