Our lovely ex-Chair of our Society is keeper of the “Archive’ (well, the documents part.) He is now very ill and we need to get it all sorted. It is not a proper archive, so even he doesn’t know what is in it. It is also very extensive, several rooms worth. Our museum is 3-4 years away.

This morning was spent at our Remembrance Parade. I do not think I have seen so many uniformed groups as I did today. The town was packed. So proud to be a part of it! This year is a very special year. Will post about that later!

Today I had the lovely opportunity of visiting yrs 1-4 to talk about the plaque for ‘Q’ Central. The official plaque will be going up on Tuesday as part of Remembrance Day. It is to remember all those that worked in the largest communications centre in the world, during WWII.

Finally my book is printed and officially launched in a couple of weeks! What started as a book about a mill morphed into a history of the town and some of the families that helped shape it. I enjoyed every minute of it, and it even included my #OnePlaceStudy and a bit of my own #FamilyHistory !

#skystorians not attached to an institution. How do you cope with copyright issues for things you have researched on FMP for example or map images? Trying to work my way through the minefield! I was always told that as long as it was cited it didn’t matter, but not sure nowadays!

Lovely day on site today! Baby Shrew found in the wheelbarrow, a newt under a stone in a post hole, kingfisher flying the canal, and 2 fly pasts by WWII planes! There was some archaeology as well, though this was my only find of the day!

Well, that was an exciting first day back! Who had apocalyptic rain on their bingo card?! That has to go hand in hand with the first day back earthquake back in 2021! #firstdayofschool

I now have a new history project. I told my youngest yesterday and he said he would help me with research. So we started last night, all in the name of research of course, by visiting 2 of the establishments. I think we are going to enjoy me writing a book on local pubs!

That is it. After 3 years my book has finally gone to the editor. The story of one mill, 1066 to 1970. Through civil wars, floods, fires it finally succumbed to the greatest threat of all - corporate dominance. Now a celebratory glass of wine and onto the next challenge! #LocalHistory

Hard to believe but this small babbling brook becomes a raging torrent. Newspaper reports from the mid-19th century point to the disasters it creates. Houses on one street had special blocks on the doors as flood barriers. Earlier this year it made headlines as people were evacuated.

Not really a #OnePlaceStudy day today as I am desperately trying to finish my book on the local (now demolished) watermill. Word processors not playing ball today. Need to send it for editing on Friday! Eeekkk!

I love being on the opposite side of the tow path of the Grand Union. So lucky to have a cafe on the old Wichello Wharf in Linslade. The cygnets came to say hello!

In big old houses there used to be a special room, the Muniment Room. In there the records of the Manor would have been kept and updated. I was just given the Muniment catalogue of the Manor of Leighton Buzzard. The records are from the 14th century to the 19th, catalogued in the 1950s.

This sort of comes into my #OnePlaceStudy as they were remanded at Linslade Court House for trial at Aylesbury. Then in Bucks, the robbery was on the Linslade border, so extra police were stationed there throughout the search. I will be writing about the Court House and Police Station very soon!
At 3 am #OnThisDay in 1963 a London gang used a fake signal in Buckinghamshire to stop the London-bound mail train in what became known as the Great Train Robbery. Fingerprint evidence from the gang's hideout features in our #CM150 exhibition (September tickets now available). #OTD #truecrime

First day of the school holidays!!
Our town was one that had a large Wilko store that has been empty ever since they went bust.
A few weeks ago our Society was contacted as they have turned it into an Arts and Community hub until the end of August.

This had me roaring earlier. Just picture it - 1846, first meeting of the Agricultural Society. One of the sections is about servants, with 3 classes, the winner of each earns 3 sovereigns. The first winner is a male farm labourer who won it as he ‘has raised eight children’. #OnePlaceStudies

Yesterday was our local carnival so we took the opportunity to be out and about. We sold books and pictures, talked history, archaeology and family ties. Next week we are at events in our new Culture hub. It is the first step to getting an Arts and Heritage centre!

Back down at the dig yesterday. It is so dry now we can start on the potential Holy Well area. Constant bailing needed but got this lovely broken piece. Now the issue of dating it. So if anyone knows anything about Willow Pattern china?? #archaeology
