Happy #InternationalWomensDay!

We know that incredible women from Marie Curie to Katherine Johnson have made groundbreaking discoveries that allow us to better understand ourselves and the world, but at the Wyss, you don’t have to look hard to find many more women making history.
Women are making history at the Wyss Institute
Right now, women make up half of the college-educated workforce in the United States, but only make up 34% of the total number working in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This is…

A friend included this anti-acknowledgement section on her PhD thesis. She also added the proposition: “Systematic bullying and undermining of girls and women in STEM starts early on and is the reason why they do not stay in science and related fields.”
Absurd we still need to go through this

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania has indirect rate of 70%, but they probably didn’t want to list that atop Harvard because defunding a children’s hospital might be perceived as problematic.

This is devastating
These overhead rates are negotiated. Lowering it unilaterally to 15% is another way to destroy science in the US. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Another assault on US competitiveness at a time when biomedicine is roaring with innovation, an own-goal in a high-stakes international tournament. Of course the real losers are American people needing medicines and cures.

NIH cuts billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately
The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease.

If you would like to see how much economic activity and grants and how many people are employed through NIH in your state, just use this handy website.

And then contact your Congressional Rep and tell them to prioritize NIH. www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

Scientific advancements aside, this is economically irresponsible

Every $1 spent by NIH generates $2.46

For example, in 2023, $47B in NIH spending generated ~$93B

Halting NIH spending will LOSE the US a lot of money (and talent)

Stop the halt of NIH!
I am reaching out to ask that you call your US Senators/Reps. Especially those of you in red states! Tell them how important the NIH is!
