Morning! We're going to skip the last Poets.org selection because, as @heymrsbond.com rightly pointed out to me and @thevogelman.bsky.social, "Nikki Giovanni has to appear in a month where we talk about poetry."

So that's what we're doing! Today's #PoemADayJuly:

Each time you ask an AI chatbot a question, it sends a request to a data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: water.

A 🧵on our investigation into how the data centers that power AI are increasingly being built in highly water-stressed places:

The AI Boom Is Draining Water From the Areas That Need It Most
A Bloomberg News analysis finds that roughly two thirds of new data centers built or in development in the US since 2022 are in places with high levels of water stress.

the lie of an objective, neutral summary runs parallel to the lie of the objective, neutral reporter
Summary itself when taken to its most effective form is not a line of best fit pulled from a corpus, it is itself imbued with the argumentative perspective of the writer. These tools are anti-perspective machines that leave no space for the student to develop their own intervention.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Katie's right, but I want to nuance the issue.

Students come into college with an understanding of writing that is mechanical and algorithmic. It mistakes mastery of the basic form of an essay for using that form to articulate that point. Part of this is due to the culture around student writing.
I SAY THIS EVERY DAY: THERE IS AN ILLITERACY PROBLEM THAT IS ONLY GETTING WORSE.

death to chatgpt for exacerbating the issue.
“Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate…Both in the literal sense and in the sense of being historically illiterate and having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s.”
