Delighted for Meg, who was a brilliant PAC chair. She came to visit my ward when I was first elected a councillor last year, and her advice continues to constantly rattle around my head for all the best reasons. Knows the policy and politics inside out, and will be formidable.
Treasury: Meg Hillier, a very effective public accounts committee chair, Labour MP since 2005, elected unopposed.

Just a little shout into the BlueSky void:

If a councillor offers their assistance with an issue, don’t be rude.
Don’t be rude to council officers.
Don’t be rude to MPs’ casework assistants.

We’ll work hard to assist. But no matter how legitimate the issue, being an arse won’t help.

Bonkers fact that William Hague is the second longest serving Conservative leader of the past 25 years.

A truly damning line in the Grenfell report: “The government’s deregulatory agenda… dominated the department’s thinking to such an extent that even matters affecting the safety of life were ignored, delayed or disregarded”.

Everyone seems to be forgetting the 18 months of Tory briefings in the Sundays about how they were boxing Labour in, setting up difficult choices for their first year etc etc.
"There is a budget in October, and it's going to be painful," says Keir Starmer.

"We have no other choice given the situation that we're in."

There’s a clear division within the group that who opposed austerity in 2010:
- those who took an analytical approach to demand destruction which hurt trend growth, but acknowledged the need to rebalance spending given lower-than-expected GDP
- those who wrung their hands to say “isn’t it terrible?”

you know I really do think we need a bit of a moratorium on how political parties engage with the press - see this story [cont.] www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...
Labour could strip members of vote in future leadership contests
Allies of Sir Keir Starmer want to change the way the party elects its leader if it is in power, in a move being called the ‘Liz Truss lock’

Didn’t his running mate basically pay millions of dollars to be on the ticket?

This is astonishingly good advice from Tim Leung and is almost certain to be ignored by the next Tory leader.

The party won’t accept it, and they have a responsibility to keep the party together- but it demonstrates how detached from the real country they have become.

This is a great point (in a thread of great points). Many political problems come from MPs only having 2-3 staff members, not 12-15.

Do constituency stuff properly. Do policy research properly. As de facto community leaders, do comms properly. Allow MPs to take a strategic look at the world
We honk on and on about MPs' pay and frankly the thing which makes it such a bad job is their staff budgets are tiny, they are not competitive with the voluntary sector on the political side and not competitive with anyone on the admin side.

Hugely enjoying my BlueSky experience so far- suspect that’s actually because I’ve been able to start with a fresh
slate of who to follow, rather than legacy people who seemed interesting in 2014, and now are a bit 😬😬
