I hate this meme. There are so many reasons why this attitude is unhelpful if you’re not a fascist, but the whole point of history is to learn from it and do differently, and the purpose of “this is who we are/not” is to exhort people to live by their stated ideals.

So far as anyone can tell, all Musk's “philanthropy” is transparent self-dealing. The reason this so unsettling is that pretty much everyone gets a buzz from being generous. It's an instinct that's foundational to society. People who have no sense of philanthropy are antisocial almost by definition.
