“Most of the expansion of housing supply in the UK since the 1980s has created extra space for wealthy people, rather than new homes for those who need them”.
Labour's simplemindedness will be its downfall - and ours. You can't build and bulldoze your way out of the housing crisis. Unless you also change the system, you'll still leave millions without decent homes. My column today explains why.

Home truths: the only thing Labour is building is a bigger, more dysfunctional housing market | George Monbiot
Private developers offer politicians a simple solution for bulldozing through this crisis – build more. But it won’t work, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

So true
On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, everything that led to the Holocaust is in danger of being forgotten.
The Nazis channeled the demands of oligarchs, scapegoated minorities and replaced democracy with a new imperium. Those politics are returning.

No-one gets the problems around childcare until they have children. Increasing income whether wages or benefits is clearly a route out of poverty. Increasing the income of mothers massively tackles child poverty #womensbudgetgroup
Since the mid-2000s, the employment rate of lone mothers has risen from 52 to 66%, & the fraction of mothers living with a partner who are doing paid work has risen from 69 to 77%
This increase in parental employment has changed the labour market profile of parents in poverty https://buff.ly/4iZATds

The importance of social infrastructure can’t be overstated. Health, education, and care services not only support communities but also deliver long-term benefits.

Prioritising social infrastructure should be at the heart of economic policies that aim to promote gender equality. 💜

Everyday Enchantment in Newcastle. Yes really.
Over Christmas we hope to share some pics of those special routes in our city where an everyday walk is touched by enchantment.

To start, here is the path leading from the Jesmond Dene Banqueting House to the ruins of St Mary’s chapel.

Great news for the North East
I know how important buses are to people in the North East, so great news 🚌!

We’re stepping in to stop £3 bus fares being introduced in the region until at least Dec 25.

From 1st Jan a single will be capped at £2.50 with many fares costing less than this and £1 for under 22s 🚍
