I do feel a bit for the people who paid for Virgin Punk screenings without knowing it's not a movie, and the messaging should definitely have been clearer, but cmon we need a bit of grift to fund Umetsu's team locking themselves in the basement for 23 years so that they can finish it

Speculated about Momoka Hase being the art director because she worked in the novel. The secret artboards did look Liz-ish which fit the bill, but the painterly style is something I'd associate with Mao Takayama and she's also available for a debut

That or Yamasaki since she's the big weirdo--

Wrote about the end of CITY: The Animation and how it once again raised the bar of brilliant animation, design, music, and sheer imagination to breathe life into Arawi's world. Many thoughts about an all-timer production & how it might connect to KyoAni's future blog.sakugabooru.com/2025/09/29/c...

CITY was one of a kind, and I don't think anything except seeing it can convey that. It is wildly creative, a celebration of the studio behind it as it heads towards the future in the wake of tragedy (and what a bright future it is), as well as an unabashed love letter to the medium of animation.

Wrote about the lengthy, bold production of CITY: The Animation. What Keiichi Arawi's active role in the process meant materially but also ideologically, the outstanding commitment to a style, and why this show kicks ass on levels rarely ever seen before blog.sakugabooru.com/2025/09/20/c...

Keiichi Arawi is an all-timer cartoonist, but episodes like #09 show CITY's team (including himself!) attempting to best him. The magnetizing effect of consecutive spreads becomes one (almost) single cut that draws you in just as much, even more packed with chaotic energy than it was before. Insane

A series of identical panels is unnatural, so in the context of a manga about cosplay like Bisque, it's enough to convey that you're looking at photos. Anime's framing is more consistent, so this gets entirely reconstructed into an immersive sequence that still emphasizes the snapshots. It rules!

All the studio's works for decades have had staff commentary tracks! For some reason, maybe because the author is joining, CITY has fewer than usual (normally it's every episode) though #05 in particular does have one. It'll be Arawi, Ishidate, in-between director Hiroko Kuroda, and 3D director Ueda

One of CITY's greatest achievements is pushing veteran artists to tackle new challenges. Joji Unoguchi started as an in-betweener in the 80s, became a leader of KyoAni's budding BG art crew, then spent decades as art & 3DBG director

CITY #05 feels like the type of episode that will awaken the creative spirit of any young person who comes across it at the right time. Immediately lock for topic of discussion among people interested in animation, even decades from now

Most bombastic animator at the studio had a particularly long time to lead the next episode, which is the ending of an arc to boot. It might be nuclear-grade

Leaving aside the fancy shot in the first episode's intro, the final scene of CITY #04 might be the first real example of the show's interconnected madness firing at full capacity. So many different people who've been appearing intervene in some way or another, with super densely packed animation

You can take a single look at the show and feel that the energy is different from Nichijou's - not that the adaptation of that show didn't cushion everything with soothing moments. This tracks with director Ishidate saying he doesn't want to force anyone to laugh, but rather share a joyful world

Imaishi: Ikarashi directed Episode 6. He was so talented I was afraid of his creativity. When we got the offer for a season 2, I said if we can allocate Ikarashi as director, I'll consider it.

Wakabayashi: Designer Kanno is a rapidly growing talent at the studio.

Studio prez Otsuka is writing.
